The Deep Roots of Solidarity: An Interview with David

Last month I was interviewed by Dr. Liza Rankow. I want to share our conversation with you.

Earlier this summer I was interviewed by Dr. Liza Rankow. Liza is an interfaith minister, spiritual counselor and educator who writes the Substack, Healing Conversations from the Frontlines of Activism, which builds upon on her life’s work: uplifting the role of healing in social transformation. I encourage you to subscribe. She turns monthly conversations with activists about their work in the world, like the one she and I had, into dynamic articles that focus on this theme.

For this month’s Toward Solidarity newsletter, I wanted to share Liza’s article about our conversation, titled, “The Deep Roots of Solidarity.”

We touched on many topics from my own work and Liza articulated them in a way that I believe can be particularly useful for others navigating the work of social change. They include:

• How we can find hope in an unprecedented global movement of solidarity with Palestine

• What it means to develop a restorative movement culture that affirms all people’s fundamental belonging

• How we can find meaning in tying our family histories to broader histories of race, class, traditional culture, and political resistance

• Religion, spirituality, and social change

• The importance of a shared analysis in our movements that illustrates the use of social oppression as a tool of capitalism
